Who are we?

The UMR BEEP (Biology and Ecology of Deep Marine Ecosystems) aims to study the biology and ecology of deep-sea ecosystems using a multidisciplinary and holistic approach, from microorganisms to megafauna, and from molecule to community. Research focuses on the description and dynamics of biological diversity, biotic and environmental interactions, and the adaptation and response of biological systems to natural and anthropogenic stresses. These issues are addressed at different spatial and temporal scales, depending on the ecosystems studied : chemosynthetic ecosystems, cold-water corals, seamounts or abyssal plains.

What is the subject of the thesis ?

In the deep SEA, where access to food is spatio-temporally variable, cold-water corals (CWC, such as Desmophyllum pertusum, Madrepora oculata et Solenosmilia variabilis) and their associated fauna form reefs with significant biodiversity and biomass. However, the origin and circulation of essential nutrients is still poorly understood and quantified. With this thesis project, we aim at improving the understanding of the trophic functioning of CWC reefs by describing i) the resource partitioning between CWC species and their associated fauna, ii) the link between the taxonomic diversity of the associated fauna and the trophic functioning of the reef, and iii) the influence of CWC diet on their physiological needs. Using a reef-scale approach, combining cutting-edge methods such as barcoding and compound specific isotope analysis, this project will compare the functioning of reefs in the Lampaul and Guilvinec canyons. In a context of climate change, with declining biodiversity and reduced access to essential nutrients, this project will provide needed knowledge for the management of these socio-ecosystems.

What will your mission BE?

Initially, you will describe the use of trophic resources within the reef (CWC and associated fauna) at intra- and inter-canyon spatial scales to better understand the functioning of these ecosystems. You will describe the geographical variability of food resources by comparing samples from two canyons (Lampaul and Guilvinec canyons) and the temporal variability thanks to the 5 years of sampling carried out in the Lampaul canyon since 2021. You will then identify the role of taxonomic diversity on the supply of essential nutrients within the coral reef. This will reveal how variability in the taxonomic diversity of faunal assemblages influences the transfer of essential nutrients (i.e. polyunsaturated fatty acids, PUFAs) within the reef. Finally, you will evaluate how the food resources used by corals might influence their physiological needs. In this way, IT will BE possible to understand the role of diet quality and environmental pressures on the physiological needs of the species studied.
